Feruzi is a tribal huntress from the Mwangi Expanse. Very tall and lean, she has a wiry grace and incredible stamina. She left her people some years ago and encountered Chopper, who saved her life at the risk of his own. She now considers herself to be under Life Debt to the doctor, and refuses to leave his side. When he was shanghai’d aboard the Wormwood, she followed, to the bemusement of the pirates.
“So, you want to know where Feruzi comes from? Very well then, she will tell you, but it is very foolish.
“Feruzi is one of the two daughters of Mktabwe, greatest warrior chief of the Nugavi King. Feruzi trained as a Hunter as is proper, but her younger sister Ukele was perhaps a little spoiled. Ukele is very beautiful and vain—no hard work must coarsen her hands, no sun wrinkle her skin. So she stayed in the village, playing with her talent for sorcery.
“All the warriors competed to have Ukele for their wife, and great gifts were laid daily at her feet. But Ukele was prideful, and when Mktabwe gave her hand to Tomak, a great warrior, she used her sorcery to escape the village with her servants and gifts. Feruzi was dispatched to bring her home again.
“Day and night Feruzi walked with no horse, no companion save her bow and her wit, until she came to the great city of the Nugavi King. There, she discovered to her shame that Ukele had ensnared and married the king’s second son. Feruzi was too late. Still, she petitioned the king for the return of Ukele, who was already given to Tomak.
“Gracious was the Nugavi King, and inclined to grant Feruzi’s request, when his first son grew deathly ill. Verily did he seem to hover at the gate of death until Ukele produced a potion. Within a day, he was cured. The Nugavi King declared Ukele would remain as the wife of his second son as reward for her skill and cunning. Feruzi had no choice but to return home, but before she could leave the great city, she met Tomak in the street. Distraught at the news, he swore to steal Ukele away. Feruzi attempted to dissuade him, but he sent her away.
“The next morning, Tomak and Ukele were both gone. Tomak had climbed to Ukele’s window in the palace to steal her away, only to discover her there with her new husband. Enraged, Tomak slew the son of the Nugavi King and made off with Ukele.
“Outraged, the Nugavi King summoned Feruzi and commanded her to find Tomak and Ukele. So, Feruzi set off again. I have chased them this far, but now I have lost the trail and been captured myself.
“I told you it was very foolish.”
